COMEDIE – College of Southern Nevada, Las Vegas – 2016

without comments

I want to sincerely thank the College of Southern Nevada in Las Vegas for exhibiting my work in a solo show at their Fine Arts Gallery (which is really a beautiful space).  Thanks especially to Jeff Fulmer, the gallery director for installing the work magnificently and being so on top of things.  I was very fortunate to be able to visit CSN to give a talk about my work and visit a class led by the very gracious Sean Russell and Christopher Tsouras.  It’s always great to see strong faculty in a strong department, and the students are very fortunate to have them.  This was also a great excuse to finally meet the wonderful individuals and art collectors, Milo Miloscia and John Nelson.  The were so hospitable to allow me to view their home collection and take me out for a memorable evening in Las Vegas.  I also enjoyed chatting with student Sierra Akana of the Coyote Student News, and her article on my exhibition can be found here.

without comments

I am very grateful to the Portland Art Museum, Bonnie Laing-Malcomson, Curator, the Northwest Arts Council and the Arlene and Harold Schnitzer Endowments for supporting a Center for Northwest Art in Oregon.  It is truly an honor to have a solo exhibition in the APEX Gallery up now until March 13, 2016.  This is the greatest achievement of my artistic career so far, and I cannot emphasize my thanks enough for this opportunity.  Please check out the show if you are in the area and let me know what you think.  Photo Credits: Dan Kvitka.

Time Lapse Video in Collaboration with Brian Guice Media

Brian Guice

Brian Guice

This will be the first in what I hope is a flurry of posts recapping a very productive start to 2014 for my work.  I had been interested in doing some kind of promotional video to give viewers an idea of how my drawings come together from start to finish.  I was lucky enough to find Brian Guice Media here in Laramie, Wyoming who had done some phenomenal time lapse videos of some of the artists doing mural work downtown.  Brian was outstanding to work with throughout the process, and I am very pleased with the results of our work together.  I also want to acknowledge Wesley Berg, who was a visiting artist I invited to UW in early 2014 and who I met a few years ago from a drawing show we did in Santa Fe.  Wesley provided the song for the video from his musical project, Glacier Face, and it’s pretty great.

Studio Work, 2014

without comments

These are a few pieces I have been working on this winter including an annual self portrait, a text piece and a trash bag drawing I started as a public drawing demonstration in conjunction with “Definining Territories: Contemporary Drawing” exhibition at the Parkland Art Gallery in Champaign, IL in the fall.  Now that it is finished, I will send the drawing back to the gallery to be auctioned to benefit the students of Parkland College.

I just completed a new piece fairly quickly before classes start.  AUNIVERSAL PICTURE 12, charcoal on paper, 22″ x 30″, 2014.  Up next: the 2014 Self Portrait.  Then, I plan on starting my first 80″ x 80″ piece on linen which should take me the rest of the semester.

AUNIVERSAL PICTURE 8

I just completed my second observational drawing of the diaper still lifes, and my third drawing with charcoal and conte on prepared linen.  In one of the images, one might note that I will be using simple steel bars affixed to the wall as a framing device for these pieces.
